\nLas Naciones Unidas, Bangkok, 24 de mayo de 2012. Del 22 al 24 de mayo, m\u00e1s de 40 j\u00f3venes de todo el mundo reunidxs en Bangkok para el primer Foro Global de la juventud de UNiTE. El evento fue hab\u00eda organizado por la campa\u00f1a mundial del Secretario General Ban Ki-moon \u00danete para finalizar la violencia contra la mujer y reuni\u00f3 a activistas j\u00f3venes, entre 18-30 a\u00f1os, para construir alianzas y fortalecer el movimiento de los j\u00f3venes que trabajan para poner fin a la desigualdad de g\u00e9nero persistente y la violencia contra las mujeres y las ni\u00f1as.
\nLa serie de tres d\u00edas de talleres y el intercambio de conocimientos culmin\u00f3 en la formaci\u00f3n de una Red Global UNITE de la juventud\u00a0 y la presentaci\u00f3n de una declaraci\u00f3n de j\u00f3venes UNITE a altos funcionarios de la ONU.
\nEl hecho de que la violencia contra las mujeres y las ni\u00f1as sigue siendo una de violaciones de los derechos humanos m\u00e1s extendidas del mundo es la raz\u00f3n de ser de la campa\u00f1a de UNiTE, que fue lanzada por el Secretario General de la ONU Ban Ki-moon en 2008. Reconociendo el papel crucial de los j\u00f3venes en el cambio de mentalidad, la campa\u00f1a de UNiTE ha hecho liderazgo juvenil una prioridad clave.
\n\u00abSabemos que la violencia contra la mujer es un resultado de valores culturales profundamente integrados y las actitudes sociales y las relaciones desiguales de poder,\u00bbexplica Nanda Krairiksh, copresidente del Grupo de Trabajo Regional tem\u00e1tico de las NU sobre igualdad de g\u00e9nero y empoderamiento de la mujer,\u00bbLos j\u00f3venes son m\u00e1s abiertos a cuestionar los estereotipos de g\u00e9nero obsoleto y comportamientos que perpet\u00faan la violencia y la discriminaci\u00f3n\u00bb.
\nComprometerse con hombres y los ni\u00f1os para alterar los valores patriarcales y creencias perjudiciales sobre la masculinidad es una piedra angular para poner fin a la pandemia de la violencia contra las mujeres y las ni\u00f1as. \u00abIncluso si los j\u00f3venes no practican la violencia por s\u00ed mismos,\u00bbdice Shoko Ishikawa, Directora Regional\u00a0 del programa Mujeres de la\u00a0 ONU, \u00a8\u00bbtienen un importante papel a desempe\u00f1ar en expresarse sobre la violencia contra las mujeres y las ni\u00f1as dentro de sus grupos de pares y m\u00e1s all\u00e1\u00bb. Un tercio de los activistas que participan en el Foro de la juventud eran hombres j\u00f3venes.
\nViniendo del Caribe, Europa, Medio Oriente, Asia y el Pac\u00edfico, lxs j\u00f3venes activistas tuvieron mucho que discutir sobre los tipos de violencia que ven en sus comunidades y las distintas formas de abordarlo en su trabajo -como formadores de pares, consejeros, cineastas, bloggers, en refugios de mujeres y redes de hombres contra la violencia. El uso de medios de comunicaci\u00f3n social se ha convertido en una industria est\u00e1ndar en el mundo del activismo y el esfuerzo para erradicar la violencia contra la mujer no es una excepci\u00f3n.
\nDhruv Arora, una participante en el Foro y activista india contra la iniciativa Must Bol, dijo, \u00abcreo que la posibilidad de ir online de forma an\u00f3nima y discutiendo cuestiones que pueden ser sensibles en algunas familias o culturas es m\u00e1s f\u00e1cil para algunas personas. Algunos medios de comunicaci\u00f3n social permiten a las personas conectarse con otros y aprender que otras personas comparten sus preocupaciones y les da el valor de hablar de ello\u00bb.
\nEl Foro UNITE Global de la juventud form\u00f3 una Red UNITE de J\u00f3venes a partir la reuni\u00f3n de tres d\u00edas. Esta red mundial tratar\u00e1 de atraer a m\u00e1s j\u00f3venes activistas de todo el mundo a unirse a la campa\u00f1a para formar un movimiento m\u00e1s fuerte de j\u00f3venes comprometidos trabajando localmente, internacionalmente y online en su esfuerzo por ser la generaci\u00f3n que termina la violencia contra las mujeres y las ni\u00f1as.

\nYouth activists working to end violence against women and girls gather in Bangkok<\/strong>
\nUnited Nations, Bangkok, 24 May 2012 \u2014 From 22 to 24 May, over 40 young people from around the globe gathered in Bangkok for the first-ever Global UNiTE Youth Forum. The event was hosted by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon\u2019s global campaign UNiTE to End Violence Against Women and brought together young activists, aged 18-30, to build partnerships and strengthen the movement of young people working to end persistent gender inequality and violence against women and girls.
\nThe three-day series of workshops and knowledge-sharing culminated in the formation of a Global UNiTE Youth Network and the presentation of a UNiTE Youth Statement to senior UN officials.
\nThe fact that violence against women and girls continues to be one of the world\u2019s most widespread human rights violations is the raison d\u2019\u00eatre of the UNiTE campaign, which was launched by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in 2008. Recognizing the crucial role of young people in changing mindsets, the UNiTE campaign has made youth leadership a key priority.
\n\u201cWe know that violence against women is a result of deeply embedded cultural values and social attitudes and unequal power relations,\u201d explains Nanda Krairiksh, Co-Chair of the UN Regional Thematic Working Group on Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women, \u201cYoung people are more open to questioning outdated gender stereotypes and behaviours that perpetuate violence and discrimination.\u201d
\nEngaging with men and boys to alter patriarchal values and harmful beliefs about masculinity is a cornerstone to ending the pandemic of violence against women and girls.\u201cEven if young men do not practice violence themselves,\u201d says Shoko Ishikawa, Acting Regional Programme Director of UN Women, \u201cthey have such an important role to play in speaking out against violence against women and girls within their peer groups and beyond.\u201d One third of the activists taking part in the Youth Forum were young men.
\nComing from the Caribbean, Europe, the Middle East, Asia and the Pacific, the young activists had much to discuss about the types of violence they see in their communities and the various ways they address it in their work \u2013 as peer trainers, counselors, filmmakers, bloggers, in women\u2019s shelters and men\u2019s anti-violence networks. The use of social media has become an industry standard in the world of activism and the effort to end violence against women is no exception.
\nDhruv Arora, a participant at the Forum and activist with Indian anti-violence initiative Must Bol said, \u201cI think the possibility of going online anonymously and discussing issues which may be sensitive in some families or cultures is easier for some people. Social media allows people to connect with others and learn that other people share their concerns and it gives them the courage to speak about it.\u201d
\nThe Global UNiTE Youth Forum formed a UNiTE Youth Network from the three-day gathering. This global network will seek to attract more young activists from around the world to join the campaign to form an even stronger movement of committed young people working locally, internationally and online in their effort to be the generation that ends violence against women and girls.
